Gather your tools
You need a flexible fabric measuring tape (not a metal ruler), a helper, and a pen with paper. Wear close-fitting clothes or stand in your undergarments for the most accurate results.
- 2
Chest (Chhaati)
Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, passing under both armpits. Keep the tape horizontal and snug — not tight. Breathe normally and record the measurement.
- 3
Waist (Kamar)
Find your natural waist — the narrowest part of your torso, usually 2–3 cm above your navel. Wrap the tape and record. Do not hold your breath.
- 4
Hips / Seat (Dhodh)
Stand with feet together. Wrap the tape around the fullest part of your hips and seat — usually 18–20 cm below your natural waist. Keep the tape level all the way around.
- 5
Shoulder width (Kaadh)
Ask your helper to measure across your upper back from one shoulder point to the other — where the arm joins the shoulder. Keep the tape along the back, not over the top of the shoulders.
- 6
Sleeve length (Baahu)
Bend your arm slightly at the elbow. Measure from the shoulder point (where the sleeve seam sits) over the elbow down to your wrist bone. This gives your full sleeve length.
- 7
Neck (Ghanti)
Wrap the tape loosely around the base of your neck where a collar would sit. Add about 1.5 cm for comfort. This is used for sherwanis, daura suruwals, and formal shirts.
- 8
Inseam & outseam (Suruwal)
Inseam: measure from your crotch down to your ankle on the inside of the leg. Outseam: measure from your waist to your ankle on the outside. Both measurements are needed for custom trousers and suruwals.
